Best Penny Companies To Buy For 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Serendipity rocks.

In fact, random serendipitous events keep me from becoming a pessimistic and bitter observer of all that's wrong in the world.

Last week, I was lucky enough to appear on CNBC's "Squawk Box" morning program not once, but twice. Needless to say, that was (is and will always remain) a major honor.

It also meant that, naturally, I paid more attention to one of the show's hosts, Andrew Ross Sorkin, last week. Not sure why I wasn't before, but I started following the award-winning author and The New York Times journalist on Twitter. Good thing I upped Sorkin's visibility in my "social" life. If I didn't, I might not have come across this gem on The New York Times Magazine "Style" blog: Ode to the Undergarment I can't possibility do Sorkin's rhetorical talents and way with prose justice via excerpts and a paraphrased summary, so read his article. It's well worth your time, particularly if you are a male who wears underwear. But, in a nutshell (pun childishly intended), Sorkin smartly chronicles his experience with underwear, particularly the undershirt, culminating in a major chest bump for Tommy John brand undergarments. This resonated with me because, after years of searching, I thought I could do no better than a mix of Under Armour (UA) and ExOfficio boxer briefs and somewhat reluctantly purchased undershirts and briefs from Kenneth Cole. I had no idea an upper echelon of underwear even existed. At least not one within my financial reach. Tommy John stuff isn't cheap. Items run you roughly $30 to $40 a pop, but the second I opened the box and slipped on the first undershorts/undershirt set, I knew it was worth every penny. So good I'm wearing my Tommy John underpants today and might even wash them tonight so I can wear them again tomorrow before the next shipment arrives. This experience is akin to meeting the right woman. You just know it's the real deal from the word go. A first date (in this case, the Tommy John "starter kit") turned into an uncontrollable and, I reckon, very sustainable lust (a $250 order set to arrive Thursday or Friday). Why are these undergarments so good? Why are they worthy of a column in the vaunted New York Times and now one here at TheStreet? Sorkin covers those bases quite nicely, but ... how do I say this? ... Well, I'll just say it.

Another under-$10 stock that's quickly pushing within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Netsol Technologies (NTWK), which designs, develops, markets and exports proprietary software products to customers in the automobile finance and leasing, banking, health care and financial services industries internationally. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up by 28%.

If you take a look at the chart for Netsol Technologies, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last two months, with shares sliding sharply lower from its high of $12.10 to its recent low of $7.03 a share. During that downtrend, shares of NTWK have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of NTWK have started to stabilize and reverse its downtrend, since the stock has started to make higher lows and higher highs over the last few weeks. This move is quickly pushing shares of NTWK within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in NTWK if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $7.74 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 225,909 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then NTWK will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $8.71 to its 50-day moving average at $9.16 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give NTWK a chance to tag its 200-day at $10.20 to more resistance at $10.45 a share.

Traders can look to buy NTWK off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $7.20 or $7.03 a share. One can also buy NTWK off strength once it clears $7.74 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage fr
