In addition to beating the market since the beginning of the year, diversified energy utilities, such as MDU Resources Group Inc (NYSE: MDU), Dominion Resources Inc (NYSE: D) and Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE), significantly outperformed pure-play or predominantly all-electric utilities, such as Duke Energy Corp (NYSE: DUK) and Entergy Corp (NYSE: ETR), by as much as several percentage points (See Chart B).

Interestingly, among top performers, there was no dominant strategy for exploiting natural gas demand, as these firms were involved in all aspects of the value chain–from exploration and production to distribution and storage. These companies have not only been benefiting from a natural gas surplus, but also from the pressing need to expand US energy infrastructure to deliver this newfound bounty to businesses and households.

Monday -- Sounds Good DTS (DTSI) has carved a cozy living providing sound-enhancing technology in Blu-ray players, video game consoles and other devices. Despite its success, DTS is trading a lot closer to its 52-week low than its 52-week high. One thing holding it back is that it has failed to impress the market with its quarterly financials. It's coming off back-to-back quarters of falling short of Wall Street's profit expectations. It's against this setting that DTS will step up after Monday's market close to deliver its latest results. Will the streak of disappointment stretch to three quarters, or is DTS finally going to put out a report that looks as good as its audio technology sounds? We will know soon. One of the only ways to fight this is by getting bigger. A good example in another industry is Jarden (JAH), a consumer goods business with annual revenues of $7.4 billion. It as big as it is in order to be able to provide a larger assortment of products to Walmart (WMT), its biggest customer, representing 20% of overall sales. Without this wide assortment, Bentonville would have to go elsewhere for sales. The same scenario applies to cable and television content.

What: Shares of consumer goods maker Jarden (NYSE: JAH  ) jumped as much as 10% today after the company released earnings.

So what: Revenue was up 5.7% in the first quarter, to $1.58 billion, just beating the $1.56 billion estimate. The company did swing to a net loss of $4.4 million, but if you pull out one-time items, earnings were $0.30 per share, far exceeding the $0.23 estimate.

  • [By Will Ashworth] On September 3 Jarden (NYSE:JAH) announced it was acquiring Yankee Candle Company for $1.75 billion. Almost all the media I've seen since regarding the acquisition has been quite favorable. As I write this almost a full week has passed; the 10% uptick on the news is holding steady. It appears no one has a problem with this deal--except me. Read on and I'll explain why Jarden may be burning the candle at both ends.

    The Deal's Positives

The company does a good job explaining why it's acquiring Yankee Candle. It comes down to six reasons:

    1. Yankee Candle are market leaders in premium scented candles.

    2. Its brand awareness results in repeat purchases providing recurring revenue.

    3. It does well in good and bad economic cycles.

    4. Free cash flow is strong and growing.

    5. It will add 10% to its pro forma adjusted earnings per share and that's before any synergies.

    6. It didn't have to go through a bidding war.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that the deal boosts its margins in impressive fashion. Its adjusted gross margin will increase 320 basis points to 32.1% while its adjusted EBITDA margin improves 140 basis points to 13.2%. And all it has to do to achieve these improvements is to shell out $1.75 billion paid using cash on its books, new equity and some additional debt. In this low-rate environment it doesn't seem like a bad proposition. Especially if it can generate permanent cost savings through economies of scale, etc.

What it really brings to the table is top-line growth. In 2012, Yankee Candle's revenues increased by 7.4% year-over-year to $844.2 million. Meanwhile, Jarden's revenues in 2012 were flat year-over-year at $6.7 billion. Its 542 retail stores delivered same-store sales growth of 2.5% in 2012, which is more than respectable. Where it really shined was online, which saw comparable sales in its consumer direct

Additionally, I will evaluate which institutional investors bought the stock in the recent quarters (institutional backup can tell a lot about a stock), and the initiatives that the company is putting in motion in order to ameliorate its sales and margins.

    Earnings

The first step is analyzing Symantec Corps earnings growth. I am looking for companies that are able to expand both their quarterly and annual earnings by more than 15% a year. Last quarter the company generated 13% quarterly EPS growth when compared to the same quarter last year. Thus, I am not encouraged by SYMCs numbers. Past growth winners (Apple, Baidu, etc.) generated consistent quarterly EPS growth above 15% and I am certainly looking for that level before investing.

In addition, SYMC generated three-year average annual EPS growth of 10%. This is an important metric to follow in growth stocks because it highlights how well the stock grew in the past years. I like to invest in companies that are growing consistently.

    Revenue

Let's take a look at SYMC麓s revenue growth. This is a key metric that needs to be analyzed before investing in a company, as it is one of the scarce figures that cannot be modified through accounting tricks and similar dodges.

The company reported a 5% quarterly revenue drop year over year. On the contrary, I look for companies that generate more than 15% in quarterly growth.

When betting on a company, an investor wants to see sales grow or improve over time and not just in the last reported quarter. Looking at the companys financials in comparison to previous years will give participants a much better idea of how well a company is doing. Symantec Corp generated a three-year average annual sales growth rate of 4%.

Blankfein's less than confident tone, of course, raises that issue at Goldman, but you can see it even more clearly in Stanley Black & Decker's (SWK) third quarter report from October 16, before the market opened in New York. On the news, the shares fell 14.25% on the day, as the company missed on revenue for the quarter, and then lowered guidance for the full 2013 year that ends with the December quarter. The new guidance looks for earnings per share of $4.90 to $5.00, well below the company's previous guidance of $5.40 to $5.65.

Top 10 Construction Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Massive Dynamics Inc (MSSD)

Massive Dynamics, Inc., incorporated on March 15, 2011, is a development-stage company. The Company is providing services to communication tower operators. On August 20, 2012, Kylemore Corp. (Kylemore) approximately 90% of the Company. On April 16, 2013, the Company entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement with Real-View 3D (RV3D). With the Company's acquisition of the assets of RV3D, the Company is providing engineering and compliance to communications tower operators to three dimension (3D) imaging. RV3D is an image capture product company that has developed and is committed to design, patent, manufacture and market 3D imaging Z-axis capture products for the consumer computer peripherals market.

The Company has developed technology around an imaging technology known as structured light, which allows for the rapid capture and processing of the digital signal capture 3D images of objects or real time 3D video of a desired target. A structured light image is a calibrated grid of lines that is projected on the subject. These projected lines deviate as they fall over the subject. An image of these lines is captured. Real View 3D software can extract Z-axis data from these line deviations and a topographical map is created. To image a complete subject, the subject is rotated 360 degrees for the image and then another 360 degree rotation for capturing the structured light for the Z axis map information. The resulting Z axis map and the image are then fused into a 360 degree renderable image. This image can then be exported into many other formats for viewing. The Company's primary business will be to develop and market 3D scanning, capture, rendering, and printing products to four markets: consumer, commercial, industrial, and medical.

    Advisors' Opinion:
    • [By Rich Smith]

The problem with that, of course, is that competition is beginning to emerge in machine selling, as small companies with names such as ExOne (NASDAQ: XONE  ) and Massive Dynamics (NASDAQOTH: MSSD  ) begin to horn in on the printer biz. Competition will probably arise even faster in the selling of printing composites, as Hewlett-Packard discovered to its detriment, when printer ink cartridge "refillers" began stealing away its lucrative ink business.

The new road map is aggressive, but First Solar has one of the best research and development teams in the industry, and I think it has a good chance of reaching these goals. What may matter more than First Solar's progress in thin film is how quickly crystalline silicon modules are able to increase efficiency over the same time frame. As I said, SunPower is already producing modules at 21.5% efficiency, and this year GT Advanced Technologies (NASDAQ: GTAT  ) is introducing equipment it says will increase crystalline cell efficiencies by 4% or more to more than 22% efficient (about a 20% efficient module).

Fellow Japanese manufacturer Komatsu's (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) shares have slid more than 3% this past month, but like Kubota, this stock has blown up in 2013 and could be headed higher with a win by Abe and the LDP. However, there's risk in Komatsu's lofty 45% profit growth outlook in 2013: The company's the top manufacturer in China, but given the current slowdown plaguing the second-largest economy on Earth, Komatsu investors could be left disappointed. Komatsu's likely to see a strong uptick for the full year due to the weak yen -- particularly if Abe moves more aggressively after the elections -- but China's slump could make meeting optimistic projections a tall order.
