Best Solar Stocks For 2014

Sustainable and responsible investing, or SRI, is a rapidly growing strategy -- and when framed in moral terms (as an attempt to integrate one's personal ethos into financial choices) it's a topic that generates strong debate.

Ultimately, SRI is simply another investment strategy. Having said that, people's angry resistance to ethical considerations in business is odd.

If you wouldn't set Bangladeshi laborers on fire to make a buck, why wouldn't you consider labor conditions at foreign suppliers when analyzing an investment in J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) ? On the flip side, why shouldn't you decide to take a look at SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) because you care about the environment and believe strongly in renewable energy?

Such considerations should not be the end of your analysis -- but they are a perfectly good starting point as you search for stocks.

Should morality drive your investment decisions?
The Motley Fool recently hosted a Climate Change summit for investors, where the topic of morality and SRI was discussed. Watch this video to hear more.

EMCORE (EMKR), together with its subsidiaries, provides compound semiconductor-based products for the broadband, fiber optics, satellite, and solar power markets. This stock closed up 1% to $4.09 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $4.00-$4.14
    52-Week Range: $3.50-$5.62
    Tuesday's Volume: 187,000
    Three-Month Average Volume: 103,744

From a technical perspective, EMKR trended modestly higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $4.03 with above-average volume. This stock has been making higher lows over the last three months each time it has pulled back, which is a bullish technical sign. This spike to the upside on Tuesday is starting to push shares of EMKR within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if EMRK manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.16 to $4.20 and then above $4.22 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in EMKR as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.90 to $3.86 or above more support at $3.78 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 103,744 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then EMKR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.53 to its 200-day moving average of $4.65, or even $5 to $5.30.

    Source: Company earnings releases.

Solar companies have reported losses for some time now, but LDK Solar has more debt than most companies, and won't be able to survive with such feeble numbers. At the end of 2012, debt stood at $2.8 billion, and we know now that the company ran out of cash just this week. There's no way LDK Solar can survive on just $135.9 million in quarterly revenue and that kind of debt level. A problem across solar High debt loads and feeble margins aren't a challenge faced by LDK Solar alone. Suntech Power gave in to these pressures last month, defaulting on its own debt. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) is now the most indebted Chinese solar company, with $2.5 billion in debt, and I wouldn't doubt if they're not far behind LDK and Suntech. The defaults of Suntech and LDK has to be concerning for all of Chinese solar, especially if banks don't keep the free flow of funds that have powered a rapid expansion in production. Balance sheets matter
What's becoming clearer and clearer every quarter is that balance sheets matter, not just for investors, but also for solar installers. Solar modules come with warranties, sometimes stretching as long as 25 years, and if a customer questions whether a company will be around in only a year or two, they may choose another option. Since Chinese modules vary very little from a performance perspective, the customer may choose a better-capitalized company like JinkoSolar instead of Yingli or LDK, or even move to a U.S. company like First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) or SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) . As financial conditions get worse at these companies more and more customers leave and the problems get worse, creating a downward spiral. LDK and Suntech are the poster children for this and are a major reason investors need to stick with quality in solar. I've been down on LDK Solar since I began predicting its failure in 2011. 2 big turnaround stories
Among the six stocks, two have actually posted big gains over the past year. First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) has made the biggest turnaround, almost doubling since October 2012. Yet even with those substantial gains, the stock has been a longer-term loser, falling almost 60% since early 2009. The reason for First Solar's struggles has largely been the rise of China's solar industry, which created so much overcapacity that it led to a price war that wiped out First Solar's once-huge cost advantages. Even as it has encouraged investors with its attempt to dominate the large-scale utility solar space, First Solar has largely missed out on the increasing growth of small-scale residential and commercial solar installation. In the near future, that could leave First Solar on the outside of the industry looking in at higher-growth competitors taking the spotlight.
