The whole thing may seem a little "out there" at first glance, but truth be told, what Metabolix, Inc. does isn't terribly unusual anymore. It's just a little less sexy than what traders and stock speculators usually want to see and hear with their picks. Kraton Performance Polymers Inc. (NYSE:KRA) and the now-bankrupt Cereplast Inc. (OTCMKTS:CERPQ) are/were in the same business, along with several others. [Don't let the Cereplast bankruptcy filing deter you - it wasn't a lack of opportunity that up-ended CERP.]

Advisors' Opinion:

When it comes to investing in big, publicly owned candy companies, investors don't have a lot of options to choose from. The giants of the industry, including Mars, Kraft -- now Mondelez International (NASDAQ: MDLZ  ) -- and even Berkshire Hathaway, have gobbled up most of the small fries, absorbing once-famed small-batch brands into the conglomerate that is Big Candy.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Mondelez International (MDLZ) climbed 2.4% on its better-than-expected second-quarter earnings.

McDonald (MCD) was edging ahead 0.4% as same-store sales were up 0.7% in July.

That's a huge issue for Kraft Foods Group (NASDAQ: KRFT  ) and Mondelez International (NASDAQ: MDLZ  ) . After its October 2012 split from Mondelez, Kraft retained the vast smorgasbord of salad dressing brands. But even aside from dressings, many categories in which Kraft competes already face commoditization and serious private-label threats. Another drawback for Kraft is that it's confined to mature North American markets, a factor limiting its long-term growth potential.

But is it worth the potential sugar crash?
Hershey's solid profit margins, capital investments, and strong sales performance make it a quality company, but you have to pay up for that quality. A competitor likeMondelez (NASDAQ: MDLZ  ) has lower margins, with lower return on assets and equity, but is a little more than half as expensive based a variety of valuations:

Peers Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG), Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: BLDP), and Hydrogenics Corp. (NASDAQ: HYGS) have also shared in the stock price run-up. Any investor expecting more from FuelCell results was, perhaps, being irrationally exuberant.

Small cap hydrogen fuel stocks Hydrogenics Corporation (NASDAQ: HYGS), FuelCell Energy Inc (NASDAQ: FCEL), HyperSolar Inc (OTCMKTS: HYSR) and HydroPhi Technologies Group, Inc (OTCMKTS: HPTG) are some of the lesser known small caps that areworking with hydrogen fuel or hydrogen fuel cell related technology. I should say that small cap hydrogen stocks are not for risk adverse investors as there are considerable unanswered questions about hydrogen fuel related technology and whether it can be a viable green technology given the fueling infrastructure needed along with theenergy and expense involved in creating hydrogen(Note: None of these small capstocks are profitable at ). But any new technology will pose the same types of risks for early stage investorsespecially if its so-called green technology.
