Some Relief From Fiscal Q3 Earnings
Plenty of analysts lined up to predict that Apple would miss numbers for this quarter. Although they were wrong, it's not hard to see where they were coming from, as several other major phone developers (including Samsung, HTC, and BlackBerry (Nasdaq:BBRY)) missed the mark for the quarter.
Revenue rose 1% from the year-ago period, but fell 21% sequentially as Apple goes through another product transition cycle. That revenue figure was slightly better than expected, and fueled by a sizable beat on unit shipments of iPhones (where revenue was up 15% and down 21%). Sales of the iPad disappointed, with revenue down 27% and 27% on a 14%/25% decline in units, while Mac revenue fell 1% and 10%. The iTunes/Software/Service unit saw 25% revenue growth (down 3% sequentially), while the iPod continues to decline (down 31% and 24%) and is now a trivial contributor to revenue.

Consol Energy (CNX), which also produces natural gas, was up more than 3%, as was Cloud Peak Energy (CLD).
The Moody’s press release, here. Coal insiders were active earlier this year, we noted here.

During the past three months, Consol Energy (CNX) has gained 11%, Peabody Energy (BTU) has risen 3.4% and Cloud Peak Energy (CLD) has dropped just 0.8%. (Arch Coal (ACI), it should be noted, has plunged 11% during that time period.) Is this the start of a good thing?

A ready supplier
Malaysia, which is a coal export powerhouse, is going to be there to help fill the void. However, Cloud Peak Energy (NYSE: CLD ) notes that Malaysian coal is at the lower end of the quality spectrum, particularly compared to its U.S. Powder River Basin coal. That's a positive sign for Cloud Peak's export hopes, particularly as China looks to clean up the most obvious pollution problems related to coal. Right now, Cloud Peak exports about 5% of its coal, but it plans to increase that as U.S. ports increase their capacity. - [By Tyler Crowe]
At the same time, there are a few glimmers of hope for the coal industry. Cloud Peak Energy's (NYSE: CLD ) balance sheet shows some characteristics that could help it survive another rough patch for coal. It may not be a great balance sheet overall, but it's certainly better than many others in the space. Tune into the following video to get Fool.com contributors Tyler Crowe and Aimee Duffy's take on a couple other coal companies that either look like they are headed for a big fall or have stronger balance sheets to weather the storm.
